When You Have Said Too Much

Proverbs 10:19

In the Multitude of Words

When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent. Proverbs returns repeatedly to the power and danger of speech — not because words are bad, but because they are so significant.

The invitation to restraint is not about being silent when truth needs to be spoken. It is about the unnecessary words — the sharp comment, the oversharing, the response that escalates.

The Practice of Pause

The pause before speaking is a spiritual practice. The moment between feeling something and saying it is where wisdom lives. It does not always feel possible — but it can be trained.

Today, notice where your words are coming from before you release them. Are they from a grounded place? Or from anxiety, or defensiveness, or the need to be right? The lips restrained at the right moment can prevent damage that takes years to repair.
