When the Relationship Is Hard

Colossians 3:13

Bearing With One Another

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Paul is writing to people in community — people who are actually irritating each other.

The instruction is not to feel warm about it. It is to bear with — to carry what is difficult without putting it down on the other person.

Forgiveness as a Practice

Forgiveness is not a feeling. It is a decision made repeatedly, often before the feeling follows. It does not require the other person to have apologised. It does not erase the harm. It is the release of the right to punish.

If there is a relationship that is currently draining you, what would it mean to bear with this person today? Not to resolve everything, not to pretend it is fine — but to carry it without adding more damage. That is enough for today.
