The Gift of Enough

Philippians 4:11

Learned, Not Given

Paul is careful to say that contentment is something he learned — not a natural disposition he was born with, but a practice developed through experience. I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content.

This is encouraging. Contentment is not a personality type. It is a skill. And skills can be practised.

The Practice

Contentment is not the suppression of desire or the pretence that things are fine when they are not. It is the capacity to hold what is here — genuinely, gratefully — while also holding what you hope for.

Today, look at what is actually present in your life. Not what is missing. Not what you are working toward. What is here, now, that is good? Let yourself receive it without qualifying it.
