On Being Known

John 10:3

He Calls His Own Sheep by Name

Jesus describes himself as a shepherd who does not simply manage a flock, but calls his own sheep by name. It is an image of particular, individual knowing. Not the crowd. You.

This is the staggering claim of the gospel — not that God tolerates humanity in general, but that he knows each person specifically. Your particular struggles, your history, the fears you have not spoken out loud.

The Risk of Being Known

We hide because we believe that if we were fully seen, we would be found wanting. But the shepherd who calls by name is the same one who leaves the ninety-nine to find the one. He is not looking for a reason to reject.

Today, in your prayer, try to be less managed. Bring what is actually there, not what you think should be there. You are known already. Let yourself be.
