When You Have Hurt Someone

1 John 1:9

The Promise of Confession

John's first letter makes a remarkable promise: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Not: if we feel sufficiently bad about it. Not: if we can guarantee it won't happen again. Simply: if we confess.

Confession is not self-punishment. It is honesty — the simple act of bringing what is true into the light.

The Difference Between Guilt and Shame

Guilt says: I did something wrong. Shame says: I am wrong, irreparably. God works with guilt. He does not deal in shame — that is not his voice.

If you are carrying something today, put it down. Not by dismissing it, but by naming it honestly before God and receiving what he has already offered. Forgiveness is not a reward for feeling bad enough. It is a gift already given.
