Rest as an Act of Trust

Come to Me

Jesus's invitation in Matthew 11 is not directed at the idle. It is given to the weary — those who have been working hard, carrying loads, doing their best. Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

The rest he offers is not the rest of switching off. It is the rest of putting something down — of handing the weight to someone strong enough to hold it.

What Rest Requires

Real rest asks us to believe that the world will not collapse if we stop managing it for a while. That our worth is not measured by our output. That God is at work even when we are asleep.

If rest does not come easily to you, that is worth noticing. What belief is underneath the busyness? What are you afraid will happen if you stop? Bring that question to Jesus today. The invitation is open.
