Small Faithfulness
Matthew 25:21
Small Faithfulness
There is a version of faith we quietly aspire to that is dramatic. The bold declaration. The visible sacrifice. The moment others point to and say: that is what faith looks like.
But when Jesus describes the life of his Kingdom, he tends to speak in smaller terms. A woman who searches for a coin. A mustard seed. A lamp that is not hidden. A servant who is faithful with what is small before being trusted with what is large.
Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. (Matthew 25:21) The commendation is not for brilliance or impact. It is for faithfulness — over a little.
I find this both demanding and releasing. Demanding because it means there is no category of 'too ordinary to matter.' Every small act of faithfulness is seen and weighed. Releasing because it means I am not required to manufacture significance. I am only required to be faithful in what is in front of me today.
The small faithfulness: the prayer spoken honestly when no one is listening. The boundary held quietly under pressure. The kindness offered when it cost something. The return to scripture after a week away. These are not consolation prizes for the women who did not achieve the dramatic moments. They are the substance of the Christian life.
What small faithfulness is available to you today? That is the one that counts.
