The Art of Noticing

1 Kings 19:12

The Art of Noticing

I read something this week about how attention is the most basic form of love. To pay attention to someone — really attend to them — is to honor them. And I thought: this is also true of our relationship with God.

Elijah didn't meet God in the wind or the earthquake or the fire. He met Him in the still small voice — the gentle whisper that required quiet, attentiveness, presence to receive. Spiritual formation is largely the practice of learning to notice what God is already doing.

Today I want to be more attentive. To the people around me. To creation. To the movements of my own heart. To the God who is always speaking, always present, always doing something worth noticing.
