The Ministry of Showing Up

I attended a memorial service today for someone I knew only loosely. I almost didn't go — it was out of the way, I was busy, and I wasn't sure my presence would matter.

But I went. And as I sat there, I thought about how many times Jesus simply showed up. At a wedding. At a graveside. At a seaside breakfast. He was present in ordinary moments, and His presence changed everything.

We underestimate the power of showing up. Of being the friend who comes to the hospital, who brings the meal, who sends the message that says I was thinking of you. That is not small. That is the ministry of presence, and it is holy work.
