Learning to Lament

Psalm 13:1-2

Learning to Lament

I grew up in a faith tradition that didn't quite know what to do with grief. Praise was celebrated; lament was suspect. If you were struggling, the answer was to pray more, trust more, confess whatever was blocking your blessing.

But the Psalms tell a different story. Nearly half of them are laments — raw, honest, sometimes angry cries directed straight at God. How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? (Psalm 13:1)

God is not fragile. He can hold our grief. In fact, bringing it to Him honestly is itself an act of faith — it assumes He is listening, that He cares, that He has the power to act. Today I am learning that lament and faith are not opposites. They are companions.
