The Rooted Inheritance

Tracing the steady hand of God across the seams of our own history.

I often find myself tracing the lines in my mother’s hands while we sit on the back porch, watching the same sun dip behind the hills that her mother once watched. There is a quiet, rhythmic persistence in these moments that transcends the frantic pace of our current lives. When we read that God is a shield to all who take refuge in Him, we are not reading a distant theological concept; we are reading the ledger of our own survival. The faith that keeps us steady today is rarely something we conjured up from scratch. Instead, it is the cumulative result of prayers whispered in kitchens, tears shed in secret, and the stubborn refusal of the generations before us to let go of the hem of His garment when everything else was slipping away.

We often treat faith as a private, isolated project—as if we are pioneers charting a new map through the wilderness of our grief or longing. Yet, looking back, I see how our lives are actually woven into a much larger tapestry of providence. The struggles I face regarding doubt or purpose are simply different chapters in the same book where my grandmothers found their strength. It is a humbling realization that my trust in God today is fueled by the echoes of their trust yesterday. We are not just building our own legacy; we are receiving a deep, underground stream of grace that has been flowing long before we arrived and will continue long after we depart.

In the quiet of our own stillness, we must learn to recognize the scent of that faithfulness. It is found in the way we extend grace to those who frustrate us, the way we choose hope in the face of uncertainty, and the way we pass down the truth that we are loved without condition. We do not need to be heroes of the faith, just keepers of the flame. By simply staying, by simply believing, and by simply showing up for the work God has set before us, we ensure that the next generation inherits a foundation that is solid, tested, and entirely anchored in His unchanging character.
