The Weight of Our Worries

Often, fear feels like a physical heaviness, a stumbling block that makes us feel as though our very foundation is giving way. We spend our days anticipating the 'what ifs'—the future scenarios that haven't happened yet. In Psalm 94:18, the psalmist admits, 'When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your loving kindness, Lord, held me up.' We don't have to be perfect or fearless; we just have to be honest about our slip-ups and lean into His grace.

Finding Stillness in the Chaos

When our minds are crowded with anxious thoughts, the temptation is to try to solve them all at once. But notice the remedy offered in verse 19: 'In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.' God does not always remove the situation causing us fear immediately, but He does provide a supernatural comfort that settles our spirit. The practice of stillness isn't about emptying your mind, but about filling it with the truth of His character.

Practicing the Release

To let go of fear is to surrender the illusion of control. It is a daily, sometimes hourly, choice to acknowledge that God is already present in your tomorrow. By focusing on His delight and His comfort, we invite the peace of the Spirit to soften the edges of our anxiety. Choose today to stop carrying the burden of the unknown and instead rest in the certainty of His holding hand.

For reflection

  1. What is the specific 'what if' scenario that is currently keeping you from experiencing peace?
  2. When you feel your foot slipping, what is the very first thing you usually do to try to steady yourself?
  3. How can you practically shift your focus from your own racing thoughts to God's comforts today?
  4. What would change in your daily routine if you truly believed God was already holding your future?
