What the Heart Already Knows
The Promise of More
Jesus tells His disciples, "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear." He doesn't speak in condemnation. He's not saying they're unprepared or unfaithful. He's saying something gentler: that spiritual formation takes time. That understanding isn't downloaded all at once.
Truth and Recognition
But then He adds something crucial: "When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth." Not teach you about truth. Guide you into it.
There's a difference. Teaching gives information. Guidance brings you into lived understanding.
The Spirit doesn't introduce truth as though it's entirely foreign. The Spirit works with what's already stirring in your heart. She illuminates. She connects. She brings to remembrance what you need to know in the moment you need to know it.
Living Into Understanding
This is why mature faith doesn't look like having all the answers. It looks like recognizing the familiar presence of God in new circumstances. It looks like noticing patterns of faithfulness in your life that you hadn't named before.
The Spirit works with your particular story, your particular wounds, your particular gifts. She doesn't standardize the journey.
For Reflection
Where has the Spirit guided you into truth by illuminating something you already sensed but hadn't fully named? How has your faith matured not through learning new things, but through understanding more deeply what was always true?
For reflection
- When have you sensed the Spirit guiding you into understanding rather than simply teaching you facts?
- What truth have you 'lived into' over time rather than learned all at once?
- How does the presence of the Holy Spirit change the way you approach spiritual growth?
