Introduction
Jesus was not supposed to be in Samaria. Jews avoided Samaritans. Men did not speak publicly with women. Respectable people did not converse with those of questionable reputation. Jesus broke every social rule in this single conversation — and changed a woman's life forever.
The Unexpected Meeting (vv. 1–9)
She came to the well at noon — not the usual time — likely avoiding the other women who would have come in the cool of the morning. She was alone when Jesus was there. And Jesus asked her for water. A Jew asking a Samaritan woman for help? Her surprise is audible.
Living Water (vv. 10–15)
Jesus offered her living water — water that would become a spring welling up to eternal life. She was thinking practically (then I won't have to come here anymore). Jesus was speaking about thirst at a level deeper than the body.
The Moment of Truth (vv. 16–26)
Go, call your husband. Jesus named her reality — five husbands, the current man not her husband. He did not shame her. He saw her. And when she tried to redirect the conversation to theology, He brought it back: I who speak to you am he. The Messiah. Here. At a Samaritan well. With her.
The Evangelist (vv. 28–42)
She left her water jar — she forgot what she came for — and ran back to town: Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. The whole town came out to see Jesus. The woman once avoided by the community became its evangelist.
For reflection
- What social or personal 'rules' might prevent you from experiencing the kind of encounter this woman had?
- Where is Jesus offering you living water in an area of your life that keeps feeling thirsty?
- What would it look like for you to 'leave your water jar' and share what God has done in your life?
