Introduction
Colossians 3 is a passage about identity and transformation. Paul has established in chapters 1–2 who we are in Christ — now he draws out the implications for how we live. The theological has become practical.
Raised with Christ (vv. 1–4)
Because we have been raised with Christ, we are to seek the things that are above. This is not escapism — it is a reorientation of desire and direction. Our life is hidden with Christ in God. This hiddenness is our security.
Putting to Death (vv. 5–11)
Paul gives a list of things to put to death — sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, covetousness — and then a second list of things to put away — anger, wrath, malice, slander, obscene talk. These are not mild suggestions but decisive acts of the will in cooperation with the Spirit.
Putting On (vv. 12–14)
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved... — compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, bearing with one another, forgiving each other. And over all of this: love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
The Peace of Christ as Umpire (v. 15)
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. The word rule means to act as umpire — to arbitrate decisions. When we are uncertain of a choice, the question becomes: which path leads to peace? Not comfort, but the deep shalom of Christ.
Whatever You Do (v. 17)
The section closes with a comprehensive vision: Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus. Everything is worship. The ordinary is holy ground.
For reflection
- What specific things is God calling you to 'put off' in this season?
- Which of the virtues in verses 12–14 do you most want to grow in?
- What would it change about your ordinary day if you did everything 'in the name of the Lord Jesus'?
